Gresham-Barlow School District Volunteer Expectations*

By checking the 'I acknowledge...' box below, the volunteer agrees to abide by the following conduct and safety guidelines. It is further understood that it is the responsibility of the teacher or principal to dismiss any volunteer whose actions are not in the best interest of the school or students.

  1. Volunteer Application/Guidelines Form. A completed Volunteer Application/Guidelines form must be on file before working with students.
  2. Identification. Volunteers are required to sign in and out of the building and wear a badge, tag, or button identifying them as a volunteer.
  3. Commitment and Level of Involvement. Volunteers must carefully consider the time commitment they are willing to make in order to create an appropriate balance between volunteering and their personal lives. They also understand that the paid staff are, by law, the ones legally responsible for the overall management and operation of the school and its programs, and that volunteers serve in an advisory capacity unless requested to serve on a decision-making committee as designated by the principal.
  4. Confidentiality. Volunteers must keep information in regard to students and/or staff members within the school in which they work, and such information is only to be discussed with the appropriate teacher or staff member at the school.
  5. Discipline. Volunteers may not discipline students. Such matters are to be referred to the appropriate staff member.
  6. Supervision of Students. Students are not to be left without supervision, especially in the event of an emergency. Volunteers should use the room communication system to call for help or send a student to the office if necessary.
  7. Emergency Drills. During an emergency drill, volunteers are to exit the building with students.
  8. Bodily Fluids. Volunteers are not usually trained to handle bodily fluids and should call for staff if a student is bleeding or vomiting.
  9. Reliability. Volunteers must be reliable and will notify the staff person as soon as they are aware of being unable to volunteer or if arrival time is later than scheduled.
  10. Example for Students. Volunteers set an example for students. Dress and behavior should not attract undue attention. Use of profanity, smoking, and the promotion of personal religious doctrine are not allowed in any Gresham-Barlow facility.
  11. Discrimination and Harassment. GBSD is committed to providing an environment that is free from discrimination and harassment. Volunteers are expected to demonstrate appropriate, respectful behavior towards students and staff. Discrimination or harassment on the basis of any legally protected status is prohibited. Volunteers should report any incidents of harassment or discrimination of which they become aware. Link to additional information and complaint form: https://www.gresham.k12.or.us/domain/16

SafeSchools Training for Volunteers
For the safety of our students, staff, and community members, all Gresham-Barlow School District volunteer applicants are encouraged to review the SafeSchools training for volunteers on Child Abuse Prevention & Reporting and Adult Sexual Misconduct. More information can be found on the Volunteer Safety Training page of the district website.

Advisory

A check of the applicant's criminal history will be made by the Gresham-Barlow School District to verify the responses to the preceding questions. Per ORS 339.374 (2), applicants will also be screened through the Oregon Department of Education's Sexual Misconduct Verification System to determine if the Department has an ongoing investigation or substantiated report of sexual misconduct before being allowed to volunteer.

By signing below, I hereby grant to the Gresham-Barlow School District permission to check civil or criminal records to verify any statement made on this form. Regardless of whether the applicant grants consent, the Gresham-Barlow School District will conduct a criminal offender record check of applicants for the position of school bus driver, volunteer, or other prospective school employees working with or around children. The applicant is entitled to review his/her criminal history for inaccurate or incomplete information. Discrimination by an employer on the basis of arrest records alone may violate federal civil rights law. The applicant may obtain further information concerning the applicant's rights by contacting the Bureau of Labor and Industries, Civil Rights Division, State Office Building, Suite 1070, Portland, Oregon 97232, Telephone 971-673-0764
